Who Is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction can give you a slimmer, sleeker, more youthful-looking physique and significantly enhance your appearance. However, it is not a weight loss solution. Ideal candidates for liposuction are healthy men and women of normal weight, with firm, elastic skin, who have stubborn fat deposits in certain areas of the body. Those with less skin elasticity may not achieve the same results as younger people with firmer, tighter skin.

How Is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction Washington DC can be performed under local anesthesia, general anesthesia, or intravenous sedation. Your surgeon will recommend the right medication for you. First, diluted local anesthetic is injected under the skin to reduce trauma and bleeding. Then small, inconspicuous incisions are made in the target areas. A very thin, hollow tube called a cannula, is inserted in the incisions and used to dislodge excess fat. The fat is suctioned out of the body using a cannula and a surgical vacuum. When the desired amount of fat has been removed, the incision is closed.

Where Can Liposuction Be Used?

Liposuction can be performed alone or in combination with other surgical procedures, such as fat grafting, breast reduction, arm lift, tummy tuck, or facelift.

This procedure can be used to treat a number of body areas, including:

  • Upper arms
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Belly
  • Waist
  • Inner knees
  • Calves
  • Ankles
  • Cheeks
  • Chin
  • Neck

What Is Liposuction Recovery Like?

After your liposuction procedure with Dr. Chang or Dr. Jenny, you will wear a compression garment to control swelling and compress your skin to your new body contour. You may also have temporary drains to aid in fluid removal. Surgical drains will be removed in a follow-up appointment. During the first week after your liposuction procedure, you will need to keep the compression garment on, spend a lot of time resting, avoid showering or bathing, but also make sure to move around gently every two hours to keep blood clots from forming.

After these first few days, you will be able to remove the compression garment to shower only, but must continue to wear it 24 hours a day. Most patients can return to work within a few days after a liposuction procedure. During the fourth week, you will be able to return to most normal activities, such as exercise, while still being gentle with your new figure. Full recovery and results may take a few months to appear, as the residual swelling subsides.

"Dr. Chang is the best cosmetic surgeon I've come across. I thoroughly trust him, and his work is absolutely impeccable. Besides being a talented and professional surgeon, he is so friendly with a great sense of humor, and no matter how small your concern is, he takes it just as seriously, listens, and offers his advice. His office is the opposite of an intimidating plastic surgery practice- everyone is so friendly, easy-going, and makes you feel very comfortable. I've recommended him to so many friends already!"

"My husband had a cyst that was supposed to be a simple removal procedure. It was very deep and much more complicated to remove than initially diagnosed by a dermatologist. Dr. Chang and his support staff spent much time and effort to safely remove the entire cyst intact. His care and concern for his patients' best interests and health are exceptional. This was our second experience with Dr. Chang after my husband had a skin graft. He is a consummate professional, and his integrity and personal manner are outstanding."

"Highly recommend Dr. Christopher Chang. I had a relatively minor procedure that nonetheless required an 'artist's eye,' and I am very pleased with the results. Dr. Chang's manner will both put you at ease and inspire your confidence in him. It is immediately obvious that he cares about and is dedicated to his work. The surgical facility was spotless, modern, and comfortable. The after-care has been excellent, and his office staff (both locations I visited) were friendly and professional."

What Are the Risks of Liposuction?

While liposuction is a very safe procedure, some risks exist, including:

  • Infection
  • Bruising
  • Bleeding
  • Anesthesia risks
  • Skin rippling or loose skin
  • Asymmetry
  • Change in skin sensation or numbness

Please discuss these potential risks as well as any medical conditions or current medications with Dr. Chang during your consultation.

Can Liposuction Give Me the Sculpted Body I Want?

If you have been struggling to get rid of stubborn fat through diet and exercise but are not getting the results you desire and deserve, liposuction may be the right solution for you. Good liposuction candidates are typically in good overall health, are non-smokers, and do not have any medical conditions that could affect a fast, healthy recovery. The ideal candidates are within 30 percent of their ideal weight and have good skin tone and skin elasticity. For those with looser skin, it may be necessary to undergo an added procedure to create a taut, firm look.

What Is the Best Type of Liposuction?

Modern liposuction produces a result that is far superior to what was achieved in the past. Tumescent liposuction involves injecting a fluid into the area to be treated, which loosens the fat cells from the surrounding tissue, making extraction less traumatic, and making the healing process faster. To find out if liposuction is the right solution for you, please reach out to our warm and welcoming staff to schedule your consultation with Dr. Chang.
